Antipsychotic medication used to treat psychosis comes with horrendous side-effects however from my personal experience and training I strongly believe prescribed antipsychotic medication must be taken religiously to prevent both positive and negative symptoms of psychosis like schizophrenia.
Antipsychotic is divided into first generation and second generation. First generation include the following. Chlorpromazine, Haloperidol, Sulphide, Trifluoperazine, Flupentixol, Zuclopenthixol, Levomepromazine, Pimozide, Perphenazine and Pericyazine. First generation antipsychotic long acting injection mostly called Depot include the following Flupentixol Decanoate (Depixol) Fluphenazine Decanoate (Modecate) Haloperidol Decanoate (Haldol) Pipothiazine Palmitate (Piportil) Zuclopenthixol Decanoate (Clopixol) All the above medication causes extra pyramidal side-effects (EPSE) with the exception of Pericyazine. Hyperprolactanaemia, Dyslipidemia, Nuroleptiic Malignant Syndrome, Tardive Dykineasia, Sexual Dysfunction and Weight Gain.
The above side-effects can be overwhelming however a choice can be made in conjunction with your doctor on the best medication for you. Second Generation Antipsychotic include the following Amisulpride, Aripriprazole, Clozapine, Olanzapine, Paliperidone, Quitiapine, Risperidone and Zotepine. Second Generation Antipsychotic Long Acting Injection popularly called Depot include Rieperidone Microspheres (Risperdal Consta) Olanzapine Pamoate (ZypAdhera) Paliperidone Pamoate (Xeplion) a metabolite of Risperidone. From personal experience and training the above medication only cause low Extra Pyramidal Side-effects however they do cause Metabolic Syndrome (High Blood Pressure, Diabetes Melitus, High Cholesterol) Clozapine causes Agranulocytosis (Depletion of white blood cells)
There is no magic bullet when it comes to treatment of Psychosis however a balancing act of medication and psychological input is very important. Experiment with medication and see what work well for you. Medication do help I mean the right medication. Do not leave everything to the doctor, your input is very valuable because only you know how you feel and the side-effects you suffer. Sometimes health professionals get it wrong as well as cost of medication may be an impediment in some areas. For example Paliperidone Pamoate (Xeplion) is expensive and this medication causes less side-effects and is very convenient to take because is once every month (Depot) coupled with lesser side-effects.
